President-elect John Dramani Mahama has reassured Ghanaians of the resilience of the country’s democratic system, emphasizing the need to build on its foundations and strengthen democratic institutions for future generations. Speaking at a post-election press briefing in Accra, Mahama expressed gratitude to citizens for their unwavering commitment to democratic values during the recent election process.
“Our democracy has stood the test of time, proving once again that it is robust and reflective of the will of the people,” Mahama declared. “However, it is our collective responsibility to not only protect this legacy but to deepen it for the benefit of all Ghanaians.”
A Call for Unity and Participation
Mahama highlighted the importance of unity and inclusivity in strengthening Ghana’s democratic framework. He urged political stakeholders, civil society, and the citizenry to actively participate in governance and decision-making processes.
“Democracy thrives when every voice is heard and every opinion is valued,” he said. “As we move forward, let us come together, irrespective of our political affiliations, to build a Ghana that reflects our shared aspirations.”
Recognizing Election Success
The President-elect commended the Electoral Commission and security agencies for conducting a transparent and peaceful election. He also acknowledged the role of international observers and local organizations in ensuring credibility.
“This election was a testament to the maturity of our democratic processes,” Mahama noted. “I extend my gratitude to the Electoral Commission, the security forces, and all Ghanaians who contributed to a peaceful electoral environment.”
Strengthening Institutions
Mahama outlined plans to reinforce key democratic institutions, including the judiciary, parliament, and the media, to ensure they remain independent and effective.
“A strong democracy requires strong institutions,” he stated. “We will work diligently to uphold the independence of our judiciary, enhance the capacity of our parliament, and protect press freedom as a cornerstone of our democracy.”
Prioritizing Youth and Civic Education
Recognizing the critical role of the youth in shaping the future, Mahama stressed the importance of civic education to instill democratic values in young Ghanaians.
“Our youth are the custodians of tomorrow’s democracy,” he said. “We must invest in civic education to ensure they understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens of this great nation.”
Vision for a Democratic Future
Looking ahead, Mahama pledged to foster an environment that promotes transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. He called on all Ghanaians to support efforts to address challenges such as corruption, inequality, and political polarization.
“Our democracy is safe, but it is also a work in progress,” Mahama concluded. “Let us deepen it together by working tirelessly to overcome the obstacles that stand in our way and build a Ghana that is just, equitable, and prosperous for all.”
