Vice-President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has donated more than 1,000 boxes of sanitary pads to girls in 17 schools and institutions across the Volta Region as part of efforts to combat period poverty and improve menstrual hygiene among schoolgirls.
The donation, made in commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, forms part of the government’s nationwide Free Sanitary Pad Distribution Programme.
The items were presented on her behalf by James Gunu at St Catherine Senior High School. The initiative is expected to benefit about 1,000 girls in the region, while supporting school attendance, health and confidence among female students. Government has also allocated GH¢294.4 million in the 2026 budget to sustain the nationwide distribution programme.
The programme seeks to remove financial barriers associated with menstrual hygiene, reduce absenteeism among girls, and ensure that menstruation does not interrupt their education.
