The government is set to begin recovering outstanding student loan debts from about 4,000 public sector workers through deductions from their salaries, according to Controller and Accountant-General, Kwesi Agyei. The move is being undertaken in collaboration with the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) to improve loan recovery and ensure the long-term sustainability of the scheme.

Speaking at the launch of the SLTF’s 20th anniversary celebration on June 18, 2026, Mr. Agyei disclosed that the affected workers have been identified on the government payroll. He explained that discussions are underway to determine the modalities for implementing the deductions, which are expected to become part of the statutory sanctions applied to salaries.

Meanwhile, SLTF Chief Executive Officer Dr. Saajida Shiraz announced a 50% increase in access to the regular student loan package. She revealed that timely releases from GETFund have enabled the Fund to disburse more than GH¢127 million to over 46,000 students, covering all loan requests received.

The Chairman of the GETFund Board, Emmanuel Bedzrah, also reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to ensuring the timely release of resources to support student loan disbursements and expand access to higher education financing.
