Pupils and teachers of the Nandom English-Arabic Basic School in the Upper West Region are now benefiting from a newly constructed sanitation facility, ending years of challenges caused by inadequate toilet facilities.
Before the intervention, many pupils had to use nearby bushes due to the lack of proper sanitation infrastructure, exposing them to health and safety risks. The situation particularly affected female students, some of whom missed classes during their menstrual periods because there were no suitable changing facilities.
The project was implemented by SNV Ghana under the Healthy Future for All (HF4A II) initiative in partnership with the Ghana Education Service. The new facility includes gender-friendly sanitation units and changing rooms for girls, providing a safer and more hygienic learning environment.
School authorities and students have welcomed the development, describing it as a major improvement that will enhance sanitation, promote regular school attendance, and support effective teaching and learning.
